Does breast cancer run in the family?
On One Hand: Gene MutationsBreast cancer can be caused by hereditary genetic mutations, reports the American Cancer Society. Genetics.com adds that some women have a family history of breast cancer but do not have an identifiable genetic mutation. These women have an increased risk of cancer, but the risk is not as high as those with specific mutations. On the Other: Other FactorsOnly 5 to 10 percent of breast cancers are caused by mutated genes. More common risk factors include age; ethnicity; dense breast tissue; certain benign breast conditions, such as atypical ductal hyperplasia; not having children; excess consumption of alcohol and obesity.Bottom LineIt is not yet possible to identify the cause of most breast cancers. Facing our Risk of Cancer Empowered (FORCE) says up to 90 percent of breast cancers are sporadic, not caused by a family pattern. A family history or a genetic mutation does not mean a woman is certain to get cancer.
