Chlorine bleach (sodium hypochlorite), when mixed in proper proportions, removes mildew stains and kills the living mildew spore growth on the wood surface. However, it will not kill mildew deep in the wood. Mildew needs nutrients to live. A bare, unprotected wood surface provides a lot of food for the spores to thrive on.
