Does being in the commonwealth help me with a work visa?

No. This isn’t the EU. So often do we hear from people who seem to labour under the misapprehension that because they come from a “commonwealth nation” that this somehow entitles them to special treatment. Please be assured that it does not. This is not a good time to try and come to Canada. We are in the midst of a deepening recession and so whatever jobs there are out there will go to citizens, not to foreigners. I don’t know who fed you that line about you being able to work here without a visa if you return every few months or so. You were either given mistaken information or else flat out lied to. I would advise you to stay put for the time being. When the economic situation improves, then consider applying for a work visa – but please don’t think that being part of the commonwealth entitles you to anything special vis a vis working in Canada. Sorry – that’s the way it is.
