Hey graceisenough, No, it does not need to be covered, but it does need to be kept moist. Covering with a light scrape of dirt (like a rake), will help prevent birds from finding the seed before it has a chance to germinate, and it allows better moisture contact with the seed. Your percent of germination of the seed you put down will go up if it is slightly covered.
