Does atlantis really exist?
No one knows. There are rumors about it being buried off the east coast of America, in the Aegian sea, in South America, and a bunch of other places. Google it. there have been dozens—perhaps hundreds—of locations proposed for Atlantis. Most of the historically proposed locations are in or near the Mediterranean Sea, either islands such as Sardinia, Cretand Santorini, Cyprus, Malta, and Ponza or as land based cities or states such as Troy, Tartessos or Tantalus (in the province of Manisa), Turkey, and the new theory of Israel-Sinai or Canaan as possible locations. Locations as wide-ranging as Andalusia, Antarctica, Indonesia, underneath the Bermuda Triangle, and the Caribbean have been proposed as the true site of Atlantis. In the area of the Black Sea at least three locations have been proposed: Bosporus, Sinop and Ancomah (a legendary place near Trabzon). The nearby Sea of Azov was proposed as another site in 2003. In Northern Europe, Sweden (by Olof Rudbeck in “Atland”, 1672-1702),
The general scientific/historical consensus is that there was no continent named Atlantis which sank under the ocean. However, there are many plausible theories. The most plausible is that the eruption of the volcano Thera which shattered civilization on the island of Crete during Greek times provoked the legend. The original account of Atlantis was told by the Greek philosopher Plato. More of the theories are here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Location_hypotheses_of_Atlantis http://en.wikipedia.
