Yes. Why is it that an act which would be considered assault if done to any stranger on the street, and spousal abuse if done to one’s spouse, is considered “tough love” when done to one’s own child? There is no excuse for the continued acceptance of this barbaric practice. Now it should be noted that ASFAR favors appropriate punishment based on the severity of the act–obviously a parent should not be thrown in jail for spanking a child lightly. But we should discourage such acts.
