Does anyone think we should bring back national service?
I agree with reinstating the Draft in the US. In fact, early in his campaign, then candidate Obama suggested that very thing. But that quickly went away… along with my support. First, “all volunteer” military doesn’t work. A complacent, spoiled society seems to find it much easier to sit in front of a 60-inch HDTV with a $7 designer coffee and second-guess everything they see than to get involved and do something about it. “All volunteer” was meant so everybody could volunteer. Options were offered fr jobs, assignments. Ridiculously large enlistment bonuses are offered along with other costly benefits. Yet 90% of the population “volunteers” NOT to join. So the recruiters are forced to select from whatever walks, staggers, crawls, or slithers through the door… or oozes under it. Recently somebody posted that 70% of the applicants are unfit for military service. Somebody here has posted that enlistments are up, and therefore a draft isn’t necessary. That’s incorrect.
