Originally Scotland, now the USA according to this I found on the net. The first edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica was edited by William Smellie (pronounced Smiley) and the first instalment (of the three volume work) was printed in Anchor Close, Edinburgh in 1768. The second edition was edited by James Tyler, who wrote much of it himself and expanded it to ten volumes. A number of editions were published in Edinburgh over the next 100 years as the work expanded to 21 volumes. The rights to the encyclopaedia were bought by an American company early in the 20th century and it has been published in the USA since 1921.
