Does anyone knows how to identify the Gender of Lovebirds?
The only sure ways are a DNA test or surgically sexing the bird. (Pelvic sexing is just not reliable enough to bother with, especially if you’re a serious breeder- seen one too many “boys” end up laying eggs, even when sexed by people that have been around birds for 50 years..). Most species of lovebirds you can not sex by looks, colors, size, or behaviors. Surgically sexing, is just what it sounds like, a vet has to surgically find out if it’s a boy or girl. DNA testing is by far the best way to go. It’s cheap, easy, and you can do it yourself at home. You can order a kit from various places online (I personally use Avianbiotech.com). You can then either clip a nail a little short for a few drops of blood on a test card, or simply pluck a few chest feathers. Send it in, and in just a few days you have the results. It’s generally around $20 for blood, and $25 for feather testing.
