Does anyone know why sects and cults are short lived?
Sects and cults are two different organizations of religion. Sects are more permanent than cults. They often have theological schools and ordained leaders. Although they lack the power of major denominations (like Lutheran, Methodist, Baptist, etc.), some become very large (Seventh Day Adventist, Church of Christ Science, Jehovah’s Witnesses, etc.). Large sects have great staying power and outlive their leaders because they have an internal hierarchy of power. Cults tend to be small. They are usually led by self-proclaimed prophets. These charismatic leaders generally don’t accept rivals in leadership positions. So, when the leader dies or leaves for some reason, there is no replacement. There are thousands of cults in the U.S. The only ones we hear about are those that draw the attention of law enforcement groups. Jim Jones and his temple members moved people to South America where they committed suicide. Big news story. Another group in San Diego committed suicide in order to free th
