Does anyone know why people get married by the altar in a Christian marriage ceremony?
The alter is usually the centerpoint of the church. It is a place for people to focus and people are often much better when they have an actual focal point rather than nothing. Since the alter is the centerpoint of the church, it makes sense that a couple who wants to take their vows before God would do so near that focal point inside the church.
