One reason for putting the clocks back one hour on the last Sunday in Octember, is to allow for an extra hour of early daylight in the morning. It has been found that this reduces road accidents considrerably as bleary eye comuters drive to work. During WW2 we used to have double Summer Time which meant it was daylight until around 11pm or even later, depending where you were in UK [north/south] in the middle of June and right into September which made it possible to gather in the enormous UK harvests. The link below should help explain in more detail about clocks forward and back etc. Plus something about double summer time in WW2 which I only vaguely remember from my early childhood. http://www.nmm.ac.
