Unless an author puts his book on his webpage and invites you to read it for free, it is not legal. If the book is on the author or publisher’s webpage, it is legal. If the book is older than 1922, it is legal. If you are purchasing an ebook from a reputable publisher, it is legal. If you are reading an ebook from a public library and put in your library card number, it is legal. Otherwise the book is stolen property put online by book pirates to share with other thieves. Both the person that uploaded the story and the person that downloaded the story without written permission of the author have committed a crime.
