Getting a good media work experience placement is very competitive. It’s important to do it right because many sectors of the industry do keep tabs on very good, or bad, applicants. First, decide what kind of media you may be interested in. Pick some organisations and then telephone their main number and ask for the details of the person who deals with work experience placements. Then send them a full letter of application together with a correct CV (ie, at your age, on one page only, correctly spelled, punctuated etc). There’s no point in sending info to random people or expecting a placement to be sorted out on the phone – this is where numerous people go wrong Do not email, unless specifically told to. Newspapers etc will often not open unsolicited attachments. Your email will be deleted. Most applications are rejected at this stage because the name of the person dealing with this is incorrect or spelled wrongly – that’s the quick way we sift out the hundreds of applications we get
