Does anyone know what year the cane was no longer used in Austraian schools?
Depends on the state and the type of school, but nowhere was it as early as the 1970s. The first state to remove the cane from its government schools was Victoria in 1983, followed by New South Wales in 1986. New South Wales then brought the cane back in to its state (public) schools in 1988, before getting rid of it a second time in 1995. It was banned from NSW private schools in 1997. It was officially got rid of from both private & government schools in Tasmania in 1994; in government schools in Queensland in 1995; in ACT from government schools in 1988 & private schools in 2004; from Western Australia’s public schools in 1987; and from Victoria’s private schools in 2006. Today the cane is still an option in Northern Territory schools, private and public; and in private schools in Western Australia, Queensland and South Australia *. I certainly know of private schools in SA and up in the Territory where the cane still gets used. And for caning schools in Queensland, see
