Does anyone know what the definition of a severely disabled person is?
If you are doing a dissertation you need to know straight off that there is no absolute definition for anything related to disability. What is true is the UK may or may not be considered true in the US – what was true 5/10/50 years ago may not be true today. In your dissertation you need to define the terms you use in your paper as accurate for your paper. When you cite a paper you need to look for what they used as their definition. I know many people who consider my son to be severely disabled. He is labeled by the school system as severely cognitively impaired. My partner considers him severely disabled. I don’t. I don’t think my son thinks of himself that way. A lot of what people consider when labeled is how does that person differ from the norms I am most familiar with? My partner because he works in a high tech computer field sees my son (who is a nonreader with Down syndrome) as completely unable to participate in much of what is his everyday routine.
