Does anyone know what pope leo x contribution was to the reformation?
Here are some things I found: 1. Pope Leo X is blamed for letting the upset Augustinian monk and theology professor, Martin Luther, get out of hand. Luther’s ninety theses were nailed to the door of a church in Wittenburg, Germany in 1517. They were mainly concerned with the sale of indulgences being used to build up St. Peter’s. Leo had continued to sell indulgences, just as his predecessor, Julius II, had done and remained deaf to complaints. He did not handle the situation adequately and dismissed it as “monkish squabble.” He was confident that the uproar would simply disappear if it was ignored, but it turned into an all out religious rebellion instead. Luther gained the protection of several princes. Leo X excommunicated Luther on January 3, 1521, hoping that the princes would withdraw their support.
