Does anyone know what Otto Franks personality was like (From the Diary of Anne Frank)?
In my opinion he comes across as a very loving father, albeit in impossibly difficult and unusual circumstances. He is trying desperately to hold on to his family’s dignity and must retain some sense of strength as husband and father. At any time he knows his children will be terrified and it was a father’s role in those days to make children feel protected. As the father of girls he would undoubtedly have felt out of his depth at times, the classic culture clash situation. But ultimately he strikes me as a man trying to keep everyone together, while retaining his own sanity. He was a realist, and felt much hatred for the Nazis, and great anger at what was happenning – but because of the circumstances it was an impotent anger he could do nothing about. Imagine the pent up rage that must have been burning inside him. I saw a good play of the diaries back in 95 and I’d say he was played as middle-aged and progressively wearier and more depressed, but like a good doctor always responding
