Chemical pregnancies are very common. A chemical pregnancy is considered an extremely early miscarriage – before the heartbeat, before the fetus has developed. Basically implantation may have occured, the cells start to divide and the hcg levels increase and can be detected in a blood test or possibly a home pregnancy test . . . and then it is over. It is just like getting your period and not being pregnant anymore. Most women who experience chemical pregnancies do not even know that it happened as it is right around the time of their normal period. I had a chemical pregnancy – we were using fertility meds inconjunction with an IUI – the only reason we knew was because the bloodwork indicated a very low hcg level showing pregnancy . . . and then I got my period the next day, did follow up blood work and was no longer pregnant.
