This is a big topic and there are no short answers.I suggest you get hold of “Modern Equity” by Hanbury and see what you make of the introduction.Although the key word is “modern” you cannot totally avoid at least one brief historical reference : The Earl of Oxford’s Case (1615) in which it was held that where common law and equity would produce different results equity prevails.See : http://nli.northampton.ac.
