Does anyone know the difference between a Zebra crossing, a Pelican crossing and a Puffin crossing?
A Zebra Crossing has no light controls, drivers are obliged to stop to allow pedestrians to cross. Pelican Crossings (pedestrian light controlled) have lights installed which hold the Traffic on red for seven seconds to allow people to start crossing. A flashing amber sequence allows people already on the crossing to reach the other side before traffic can move off. A Puffin Crossing (Pedestrian User Friendly) is similar to a Pelican but has no flashing amber. Sensors on top of the lights hold the traffic on red whilst there are still people crossing. In addition to those three crossings, there’s also a Toucan (because TWO CAN cross) which allow both pedestrians and cyclists to LEGALLY ride across, and the rarer Pegasus which allows horses to cross, this has a fence to separate the horse from traffic which has to be ridden around to cross.
