Does anyone know of a medication that treats both anxiety / mild depression?
Many of the SSRI anti-depressants are used to treat a combination of Generalized Anxiety and Depression. These medications include Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Celexa, and Lexapro. They are most commonly prescribed due to their lower risk and milder side effects. Tricyclic antidepressants were developed to treat depression, but these drugs can be useful for treating panic disorder. Of the a tricyclic antidepressants, imipramine (Tofranil), has been the most extensively investigated for anxiety. However, if your anxiety is bad enough, you may need to take a medication from the Benzodiazepine class (on top of the anti-depressant medication). They are known to quickly reduce anxiety to tolerable levels and are often viewed as the first treatment to consider for generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder and social phobia. They include Xanax, Klonopin, Valium, and Ativan. I do believe your best bet for effectively treating both conditions is one of the SSRIs. Good luck.
