Stay away from Bose. It is mass-marketed, expensive garbage. No serious music/HT hobbyist will recommend Bose gear. First, go to a high-end stereo store with some of your favorite music and video disks. Listen to a variety of speakers. You will be happiest if you place the biggest part of your budget into your speakers. Afterall, that’s the part you hear. After you find your speakers, BUY A USED SET though e-bay from a seller with a nearly 100% positive feedback. Good brands with awesome sound reproduction include B&W, Paradigm Reference, Martin Logan. and Magnepan. Look for a Velodyne subwoofer for your bass reproduction, unless you can afford high-end full range speakers. Now that I see you are living in the UK, I’ll reiterate my recommendation of B&W, which are made there. Bowers & Wilkens speakers cost more in the US than they do in the UK, just because of transportation expenses. Since you can buy more B&W for less there, go for the Nautilus line of speakers.
