Does anyone know much about the ancient Scythians?
The problem with lack of knowledge lies with the geography of this ancient culture. Since most of the archeological sites lies on territory of ex-USSR, there is very little information that was distributed toward the West and English language. The best source on them are in Russian and the largest collection of Scythian arts is in St. Petersburg in Russia and also in Kiev. Since break up of USSR and the pure lack of funding created a gap where not many publication, mostly initiated by Russian or Ukrainian academia, were published. This problem of inaccessibility of Western scholars to the historical leftover of Scythians in Ukraine can be well detected in the book, the World of Scythians, were author had to guess (and incorrectly) about them. The good book about Scythians were published more than 25 years ago. I would recommend From The Land of the Scythians.
