The only way I know of doing this is sort of a hack. If anyone has a better answer, please respond to the list, ‘cuz I want to know too! What I do is grab the uppermost bone in the heirarchy of the model or part that I want flipped, write down the start and endpoints of that bone, then figure out what the endpoint would be if it were facing in the opposite direction. Then I use the scale manipulator button, and while holding down the Ctrl key, I scale the bone “backwards,” watching the properties box, until it’s end point reaches my calculated end point. This only works if you want to flip along the axis of the bone, although I see no reason you couldn’t add in a new patriarch bone along any axis, just to use this trick.
