Does anyone know if rear wheel bearings are connected to breaks?

The clearance between the brake drums(I am assuming you have rear drums) and brake shoes is miniscule at best, the brake drum is attached(by the lug bolts/nuts) to the axle, the axle is supported by the axle bearings. This is the ‘connection’ between the drums, and bearings. should the axle bearing go bad, it COULD cause the axle to be displaced within the axle housing, thereby allowing the axle to cause the drum to contact the brake shoes, especially when appling the brake pedal, causing the shoes to attempt to ‘rotate ‘ with the rotational force of the drum. This could be the cause of the ‘noise’ you are describing, the ‘twanging’ being the brake springs flexing while being held in place as the shoes try to rotate. Hope this somewhat explains your dilema.
