Does anyone know if any type of insurance covers a bike hitting a car?
With respect to a bicycle, your son is liable for the damage and your insurance company will not get involved as your car was not the cause of the accident. This is a problem I have been actively campaigning about for years – the fact that cyclists do not have to carry any form of third party indemnity as a legal requirement. A lot of new cars are effectively leased to the owner over a given period on a rolling ownership basis i.e you buy a new car but only pay about half of the monthly finance costs and then at the end of the term you either pay off the remaining finance in a lump payment or trade the car in against another new one and start the process over again. A condition of the agreement is that all servicing and repairs are carried out by the authorised dealer and failure to do so means that you cannot trade the car back at the end of the term and you will have to pay the outstanding finance. Any panel replacement on a modern car costs around the £500 – £600 mark plus sundries
