Does anyone know how to permanently associate an Elastic IP to – say – an instance or AMI ID, so that when that AMI gets booted it automatically is assigned the EIP?

The API I’m aware of lets you associate an EIP with a running instance . If that instance is shut dowm, then restarted some time later, then it seems you must manually re-run the ec2-associate-address command.
