Does anyone know how to get grants for buying a new home?
Although they don’t offer grants I believe, depending on your economic situation you may want to take a look at Self-Help Credit Union (www.self-help.org) (broken link). They are a non-profit credit union with a fabulous track record in N.C. (their founder, Martin Eakes, was I believe last year named North Carolinian of the Year by the N&O). Besides taking on some important causes in the state and nationally, like helping to fight for legislation against predatory payday lending tactics, they have a number of home loan programs available that aim towards their mission of helping to improve communities by encouraging home-ownership, particularly among those who may not otherwise be able to afford it. They also do some development of housing stock, primarily as in-fill in cities in the Triangle, Charlotte, and elsewhere in N.C.
