Something similar happened to me a few years ago, and it was entirely my fault. I has putting some stuff away in our attic and I moved a heavy board on the phone wires, which pinched them and screwed up our connection. The phone company had to come out and simply replace the wire, but there was a charge. If you haven’t been messing around in your attic or basement, it’s possible that weather, probably extreme cold, has caused the wiring to come loose. Or it could be the work of animals, either insects or squirrels or something. You can crawl around and check all the wiring to see if you spot the trouble, but without some meters you’re probably going to have a difficult time. I hate to say it, but you’re better off paying the $85.
