It depends on lots of things: how much they like your book and think it will sell, how many copies it actually does sell, who you are, etc. The typical pay structure for a book through a traditional publisher like M&B is something like this: When they buy your book, they pay you an advance on royalties. In your case, as a new author, this is likely to be modest. Once your book is published, you’ll get a certain amount per book that sells (although you won’t get a payment until this amount adds up to the amount of the advance–which is like a down payment to you). Royalties can vary, but it’s stated in terms of a percentage of either the retail price or the net price (what the publisher gets for it from bookstores, distributors, etc.).
