The list of schools that offer it is very large. There are two ways to get a PhD in Finance. One is to get it through a Business School. The second is to get a PhD in Economics, doing a field in Financial Economics. The top B-Schools are exceptionally tough to get into. The top programs only accept three to six people per year, and get anywhere from 250-400 applications. In my opinion, the best PhD programs in Finance (through a B-School) are: 1. MIT (tie) 1. University of Chicago (tie) 3. Stanford University 4. University of Pennsylvania (Wharton) 5. UC-Berkeley (tie) 5. UCLA After these schools, there are several B-Schools that are particularly good in Finance. I would put Duke, Northwestern, NYU, Columbia, University of Rochester and Carnegie Mellon in the next group. After them, I would put Yale, Harvard, UNC, Maryland, Texas and Cornell in the third group. It is easier to get into a good economics program than a good finance program.
