In general, a telescope does not make a good surprise gift. That’s because they are so specialized that each observer practices the hobby in a way that suits his scope, and in the best case the scope and the observer fit like a glove. That being said, you have taken a good approach. It sounds like you are getting advice already from a shop assistant that at least has some knowledge on the topic. If he works for an establishment that specializes in optical instruments, then you will probably get better advice there than here (including from me). The scope that you have described represents a fairly new combination of features. I have never tried it, myself. It may be like a new car model – subject to unexpected flaws that were not evident in the initial testing. I am not personally enamored with the GoTo computer that is included.
