Does anyone know any folk stories that have something about flowers in?
This is Greek, not from the brothers Grimm. There was an ancient Greek fellow names Hyacinthus who was so good looking that Apollo fell in love with him. One day the two of them were throwing the discus and a gust of wind caught the thing and it bonked poor Hyacinthus on the noggin. Naturally, since this is a Greek story, it killed him instantly. In another version, which is more likely, the discus smacked against a rock and ricocheted and hit Hyacinthus and THEN it killed him. Anyway Apollo was so sad, he decided to make his buddy immortal. Since the blood that flowed out of the poor broken head-bone had dyed the local flowers red, Apollo named them hyacinths, recalling either the god’s cries of sorrow (Ai, ai, ai!) or else there’s a little mark inside that looks like the first letter in Greek which looks like an apostrophe to us.
