You need to research Gluck’s reforming of opera – moving from the fairly static opera serie written by the likes of Handel and Vivaldi (and many lesser known composers) which led to the operas of Mozart – although he continued to write opera serie, particularly his last opera, la Clemenza di Tito. Many works were written for the church – Mozart wrote several settings of the mass ranging from very short 10 minute works up to his last great mass (unfinished) that in C minor. He also wrote settings of the liturgy such as the Solemn Vespers for a Confessor (listen to the sublime ‘Laudate Dominum’). He also wrote separate arias for insertion in others operas and as stand alone concert pieces – listen to Ch’io mi scordi di te which lasts for over 9 minutes and has an obbligato piano.
