Approach to the diagnosis of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma Arnold S Freedman, MD Jonathan W Friedberg, MD UpToDate performs a continuous review of over 375 journals and other resources. Updates are added as important new information is published. The literature review for version 15.1 is current through December 2006; this topic was last changed on December 15, 2006. The next version of UpToDate (15.2) will be released in June 2007. INTRODUCTION — The initial evaluation of the patient with suspected non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (NHL) must establish the precise histologic subtype, the extent and sites of disease (localized or advanced; nodal or extranodal), and the performance status of the patient. The reason for this is that the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of NHL are strongly dependent upon obtaining this information. The components of this initial evaluation are reviewed here, although staging and prognosis are discussed separately. (See “Staging and prognosis of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma”).
