The following is a good way to get rid of Argentine ants (the tiny sugar-loving black ants native to South America and common in Mediterranean climates worldwide): 1. Vacuum up visible ants. Add some cornstarch to suffocate them in the vacuum bag. 2. Remove attractants such as food and garbage, or place them in tightly sealed containers. 3. Erase the ants’ odor trails. Citrus-based preparations are effective, and a cinammon-cayenne mix may also work. 4. Set out bait. A mixture of boric acid and/or borax in sugar water will kill the ant colony in a few days as the workers take the bait back to feed the rest of the colony.
