If you just have a sore throat, you can take advil and tylenol to help with the pain and it should go away on it’s own. If it doesn’t get better in a few days, you may need an antibiotic, so you’ll have to see a doctor. If you have STREP throat (which is different from a regular sore throat) you need to go to the doctor to get an antibiotic. The only way to know if you have strep is to have your throat swabbed. If it is strep, you need to treat it with an antibiotic because strep can go on to cause heart problems if it’s untreated. It is a serious infection.
