Does anyone here remember when compulsory prayer/Bible reading was abolished in public schools?
When I was in grade school, back in the 50’s, some schools started backing off on prayer. As I remember it, there wasn’t much of an impact at all. It was just something else we did on a regular basis, like the pledge of allegiance. One less thing to do was OK with us – no big deal. There weren’t any kids who claimed to be atheists, then, but then virtually no one did much announcing their Christianity, either. I remember most of use were jealous of the Jewish kids who got presents every day of Hanukkah, instead of just our one Christmas day, and they got more holiday “days-off” from school than we did. Some of my friends were altar boys (I was/am a Protestant and couldn’t relate to their experiences) but we all committed the same sort of boy “sins” and what we did at “church” never seemed to cross over into regular Life.
