Does anyone have any opinions, advice, or experience regarding online Masters of Science (graduate) programs for Project Management?
Hi Jim, The main piece of advice I give to project managers is to look for a PMI Globally Accredited (GAC) program. This will help to ensure that the program you choose is worth more than the PMP credential (from a content-knowledge perspective). Even with substantial experience, the MSPM should build your skills and knowledge even further because the instructors also have years of experience and the content is significantly more advanced than the PMP. As an example, we used to offer 6 credits toward our MSPM for PMP’s. When we got GAC accredited, PMI said that the PMP was only worth 3 credits. That equates to 8-9 courses of information that go beyond the PMP credential. We’ve seen it time and time again. From PM’s with 20 years of experience in the largest companies in the US to new PMP’s with barely enough project experience to earn the credential, a good MSPM will provide you value far beyond wanting to simply teach or write scholarly articles.
