You’ll have to produce something first these days. Otherwise an agent won’t touch you unless you are already a celebrity or well known expert on a desired subject. Travel writers may have better luck, and some short story buyers might do something on spec but typically only with an author they have worked with before. Check the reference section in a book store for the current Writers Market. There is a lot of info out there. The most important thing to remember is avoid any agent charging unreasonable fees. Many of these so called “agents” make most of their income from these fees and will accept work from anyone, knowing that it’s poor writing and has no chance to sell. The most you should pay in fees is less than $30 to help defray the cost of copies, postage, etc. as they shop your product around. An ethical agent will accept only clients with a book or screenplay that they feel is worth their time to discuss with their publishing contacts. If they do a good job of selling your wor
