I have never filled out any paperwork when purchasing a firearm from another individual, but it depends what state you live in. California, Maryland (handgun or assault rifle), Rhode Island, and Pennsylvania (handgun only) require a background check even for private sales. In addition, Alaska, Illinois, Massachusetts, and Washington have some reporting requirements, so if you are from one of those states, check the state and local laws first.
