“Soothing” is a word that can be subject to a variety of moods by people. Something soothing for me can also be fast. (Chopin’s prelude op. 10 #8 in f minor is an example.) For some people, if something is played slow that may turn a piece into a laborious listening experience. However, even with that said, there are a number of great pieces by Chopin in the minor keys that would probably be “universally” soothing. Among which is an absolutely beautiful piece, op. 45 in c# minor. There are also three preludes in the op. 28 set: #2 & 4 in e minor, and #6 in b minor. Also try Ravel’s “Pavane for a Dead Princess” for piano. In addition to soothing, it is also stirring. From Rachmaninoff, try his “Serenade” from the Morceaux de Fantaisie, Op.3 (#5) There is a lesser-known composer by the name of Charles Valentin-Alkan (a contemporary and good friend of Chopin) who wrote a Barcarolle, Op. 65 that is exquisite. He also wrote a number of other pieces that may work for you: Le Chanson de la Fo
