Sorry if I state the obvious, but highway 17 west from Ottawa is the best option in my book. Anywhere west of Ottawa, flying a “West” sign, there’s a very good chance you’ll get picked up by trucks going at least to Sault St. Marie. As far as avoiding, I suggest taking the bypass that goes around Winnipeg, and that will save you some time and mosquito bites. If you have 2 weeks to make the trip then I strongly suggest you go all the way to Kamloops, then North, because the Okanagan and southern BC in general is absolutely beautiful in summertime and the best place to hitch in Canada imo. I can almost guarantee you will not regret the detour. If you really just want to get there, then the Edmonton route is best. good luck!
