I think Pretear was pretty good for the romance/magical anime. There are a few plot twists and everything in it is not roses but it did make you feel for the characters. If you want just romance then I would recommend Kare Kano. It’s kind of old but the romantic sides of it never die. You get to see how the main couple develop over time through the school year. It mixes comedy with drama without sacrificing the bond between characters.
