The standard test for an aldehyde is Tollen’s test. Put about 1 mL of your suspected aldehyde into a test tube and add the same volume of Tollen’s reagent (ammoniacal silver nitrate). An aldehyde will cause the silver solution to plate out, forming a silver mirror on the test tube, nothing else will.
