Does any trace remain of apartheid in South Africa?
Oh yes, theres still a great deal of that. Apartheid was so embedded in our society that despite changes in the objective conditions, peoples mentality has not, even from the racial point of view. We used to say that we have two South African nations: a First World one made up of the white and wealthy, and a Second World one for the poor, black population. Our black women, who still feel inferior to the rest, are the ones who suffer the most because of these differences. We still have whites who abuse the black workers, mainly in the countryside. Another holdover from apartheid is the fact that we have many homeless people and many blacks who have no access to education. Most of those who come to study here in Cuba are blacks who cant go to school back home. We have a human rights commission for cases of people who undermine other peoples rights, and a gender commission to take care of sex discrimination issues.
