Does any one have any sound information on what and where the surname LEWIS comes from and means?

If you think that one day in 1255 “John the Loud” got tired of being called that, sat down, told everyone “My name is Lewis!” and everyone named Lewis descends from him, you have been misled. In addition to the English, Scots, Welsh and Jewish already mentioned, “Louis” looks like “Lewis” to an English speaker, although the French pronounce it “Loo-ey”. I’d be willing to bet large sums at long odds that at lease one person named “Lewis” in the USA today descends from a Louis whose descendants didn’t spell properly.
