There were some kind of shocking things in it, I mean that westerners might find shocking, such as the polygamy, and the murder of the young boy, and other things that in our culture would be viewed as “inappropriate” And then, the colonialists try to change the tribal people, and their changing the tribal people is viewed as bad as well. I think this would offend people to have a primitive culture presented as being equal to western culture, aka cultural relativism. Anyway, the author seems to endorse the view of the tribal people as opposed to the western people. Although, even though the author seemed to take this view, when I read the book I was like, omg they really need someone to change their culture….so it had the opposite effect when I read it. So partly, you could say that the book kind of presented the facts, and you would definitely judge the tribal people for some of the things they did routinely….but then again, you might also judge the colonialists for some of the th
