Does any body have a clue about removing the Trash, Home, Floppy Drive icons from desktop in gnome?

I’m a newbie, (of some years), but I managed to find a SUSE 10.3 solution to getting rid of the hated and useless floppy drive icon. I hit Alt F2 to get into the Run Application mode. Then I entered: gconf-editor. THis brought me to a set of folders on the left side of the dialog box. One of the folders said: apps. So I clicked the arrow next to it so that it pointed down to a bunch of other folders. I scrolled down to find the folder called: nautilus. I then clicked once on the folder below that called Desktop. There was no down arrow. It opened up by clicking directly on the folder icon. To the right there appeared a list of what looked like files, many with long names and multiple words containing underscores. I saw files that seemed to represent the trash icon and the home folder icon. But I only wanted to get rid of the floppy drive icon, since I never use floppies. That appeared to be left out of the list. But, then I noticed a file just called: volumes_visible. That had a box th
